GUATEMALAN PERF VARIETIES AND THEIR FREQUENCY for stamps produced in Guatemala after 1942 6-19-02 by the Three Davids (Jickling, Lindwall and Reitsema)
Introduction: During World War II postage stamps were difficult to import from foreign printers as had been the practice in Guatemala since 1871. To meet the war-time demand, the National Printing plant (Tipografia Nacional) began to print stamps and the National Engraving plant (Taller de Grabados en Acero) produced engraved stamps for postal purposes.
Paper: Thick and thin gummed paper were available. After 1959, fluorescent paper was also available.
Perforations: Machines were available to provide the following perforations - 10.8, 11.1, 11.3, 11.8, 12.4, and 13.3 Later perforations were read as - 10.9, 11.4, 12.5, 12.6, 12.8, 12.9, 13, 13.1, 13.2, 13.4, and 13.5 The Linn’s Multi-Guage was considered the most accurate perforation guage. Even then, different people, got different readings from the same stamp. Differences of .1 can be considered debatable.
Many of these stamp issues had more than one printing. Mint stamps now available most often came from the first printing. The first printing, of course, can also be found on first day covers. This study has been made primarily on used stamps. When a difference is found in the frequency of perforations between used and mint stamps, it is noted.
Frequency: Based on our research, the frequency of the various perforations are given as -C- common -D- difficult to find -R- rare Let us know if you have observations and corrections for this study.
