New Issue Announcement Archives

November 15, 2005     Centenary of Rotary Clubs  Q2.00 and Q6.60, Souvenir sheet Q8.00. Designs are abstractions of the Rotary Club's aim to foster friendship and contribute to the PoloPlus program, all with the rotary wheel.

October 4, 2005     Traditional Majolica in Guatemala  Q1.00 (incense burner), Q2.00 (owl-shaped jars), Q6.50 (bowls), Q8.00 (lantern) and souvenir sheet Q12.00 (heavy jars and three sugar bowls).

July 29, 2005     70th Anniv. of diplomatic relations between Guatemala and Japan  Q1.00 (improvement of water supply in San Pedro la Laguna), Q8.00 (Hospital of the Japan-Guatemala friendship in Pto. Barrios), Q14.00 souvenir sheet with flags and Mount Fuji-Yama.

April 29, 2005     Endangered flora and fauna (Upaep theme)  Q0.50 (buzzard), Q3.00 (platanillo), Q5.00 (puma), Q10.00 (butterfly) and Q12.00 souvenir sheet (tapir).  Don't be surprised if you see the 3 lower values of the flora and fauna with one narrow side imperf.  This is their normal state as two sides of the sheet margins were not perforated owing to a technical problem.  As this affects 25% of the total printing, it should be considered as "normal" as the large quetzal straight edges.

November 5, 2004     Cardinal Rodolfo Quezada Toruño, Archbishop of Guatemala, was made a Cardinal in October 2003:  this event is commemorated by another 10-value set completed by a Q 3.00 souvenir sheet.  Besides portraits of Cardinal Toruño these stamps illustrate the ordination ceremony in Rome and religious subjects in Guatemala.

January 30, 2004     Department of Izabal:  A series promoting the magnificent tourist assets of this region.  There are 10 values between Q 0.20 and Q 10.00, and a souvenir sheet of Q 4.00. Besides the well-known Mayan site at Quirigua, the colonial era Castle of San Felipe and the placid Rio Dulce, some other places of the area are illustrated to attract tourists’ attention. Two different FDCs.

Expophilgua 2002

This compact exposition held at the old central post office October 31 to November 3, 2002, in Guatemala City was a great success.  21 one and two frame well-chosen collections practically supplied visitors with an almost complete showing of all the main exhibit classes, ranging from pre-stamp postal history, traditional displays and postal stationary to modern philately and topical collections.  Two-thirds of the collections were of Guatemala material.  Although most Guatemalan participants had no previous exhibiting experience or tutoring on the requisites of competition, overall results were quite encouraging. Following collections were qualified for international shows

Invitation to Encuentro 2005

The St. Louis Stamp Expo 2006 was held on February 24-26 2006 in St. Louis , Missouri with the ISGC featured as one of the visiting societies.

The ISGC had a table at the entrance to the show, we were mentioned in the show program, there was a write-up about our society in the show insert, and mention of our society in the nationwide advertising for the show.

The show's theme was 'Honoring the Philately of Latin America'. The Expo also hosted meetings of several other Latin American societies besides the ISGC: Chile Specialist Association, Cuban Philatelic Society of America, and the Nicaragua Study Group.

The ISGC booth was set up and manned by Michael Barie. Michael had numerous Guatemala publications on display as well as price lists and membership sign-up sheets. Many collectors and dealers came by and visited.

Other members in attendance included our webmaster, Eric Dyck, our secretary, Jonathan Topper, and Bud Hennig.

The Expo had 37 exhibits, 31 of which featured Latin American countries! This concentration of Latin American philatelic exhibits all in one show has not been seen before in recent memory in the USA !

ISGC member Dr. Roger Schnell received a Gold Medal for the only Guatemala exhibit in the show: "The 1922 Surcharge Issues". Dr. Schnell also received a Gold for his Honduras exhibit featuring the 1903-1910 Gardiola and Medina Issues.

JOINT MEETING of I.S.G.C and A.F.G in ANTIGUA

The Jicklings’ colonial home Casa del Sol in Antigua was again the setting of this traditional joint meeting between the two societies on March 18, 2005.  Ten collectors attended and a Golden Angel was presented to I.S.G.C. vice-president Jorge Baca in recognition for his dedication to the I.S.G.C., but unfortunately he was not present. Christian Aponte made a Power Point projection on “Postal gems found on eBay”.  No need to bid or buy, just copy the illustrations directly onto your computer!  He assembled in this way an amazing collection of images interesting for all who collect Guatemala!
