by
Cécile Gruson, FRPSL, CPhH ISBN 1-880721-05-8 The
International Society of Guatemala Collectors’ newest handbook has recently
been published and is now available. It
is a comprehensive listing of all types of Guatemalan postmarks, from the
colonial era to the present day. This
book is a compilation of all known markings noted in collectors’ hands and in
the Guatemalan postal archives. The
archival documents are not inventoried and therefore not readily available to
researchers. The result of this effort updates and corrects the now outdated
listings published in the Society’s handbooks Guatemala-1 and Guatemala-2.
The handbook is written in both
English and Spanish which gives it a broad audience. This
new handbook contains 269 pages and over 2,000 illustrations.
It is a loose-leaf publication in a ring binder, intended to be a
reasonably priced and dynamic tool that all collectors can afford.
The six chapters on which study had not yet been completed at the time of
the first release have now been published as a second installment, together with the first set of additions and
corrections to this main part. It
is intended to be a complete listing of all postmarks, and will be updated
regularly to reflect recent discoveries as well as new types of postmarks. Besides the regular postmarks used on outgoing, incoming, local, air and registered mail, this handbook also includes other categories such as numeral, official, nocturno, expreso, travelling post office, parcel, telegraph, dead letter and instructional markings, to name but a few of the more elusive types.
